The People Who Barely Lift A Finger At Christmas

If you’re like most of us, you will have spent the last few weeks figuring out what ‘essential’ shops sell decorations and then more recent days spending hours in line for your Christmas turkey or goose. Alas, whilst it’s a bit late for this year – Fortnum & Mason haven’t been able to deliver in time for weeks, for a gilded few it really is possible to not lift a finger over the whole festive period.

Decorations

Whilst it’s definitely ‘part of Christmas’, carrying out the equivalent of a minor house move is always going to be a stressful experience. In recent years, a whole range of companies and individuals have popped up who will happily bring, install, take down and take away every Christmas decoration you can think of. Indeed, any of us on Instagram will have seen a whole host of influencers and celebrities posting about their immaculate garlands, life-size nutcracker guards and Christmas trees literally dripping in decorations. It will come as no surprise that these services cost a pretty penny; but if not lifting a finger is your Christmas ambition next year, a call to one of these companies will probably be your first stop

Gifts

Happily, this revolution actually goes some way to confirming Father Christmas is real. It’s just that his name is Jeff Bezos and he owns Amazon. You might have to actually lift a finger; but the reality is you can easily purchase gifts for anyone and everyone without having to move off your sofa. This is obviously especially helpful in 2020.  You’re not just limited to Amazon either. Almost any store will deliver. Whether its Selfridges, Harrods or the handmade artisanal products of Etsy, all of us can now get a taste of the luxury life of stress-free shopping by tapping a few buttons and waiting for the doorbell to ring. Take note though, you will have to plan ahead. Nobody likes to get caught out by the earliest delivery date being the 28th December.

Food

Last but not least we have the food.  For many, the preparation and chopping of vegetables begins on Christmas Eve, which puts paid to the poem about the house being silent except for a mouse. Indeed, spending hours in the kitchen watching and praying the turkey comes out right has become a standard way to spend a large part of Christmas day. However, you can now delegate the actual preparation of food to a company like Cook, Waitrose or M&S – the latter do brilliant menus that can be delivered up to Christmas Eve and need only be heated up. If you’re really willing to fork out, though, you can go further. A number of high-end restaurants and exclusive London members’ clubs will deliver an entire Christmas selection (including a traditional roast) to your door on Christmas Day. With the monumental task of cooking ahead of us in the next 24hrs, it does sound rather appealing to spend the day quaffing Champagne and waiting for the food to arrive. My biggest concern here would be: “Well, what if it doesn’t?!”

So now you’ve learned how to not lift a finger at Christmas. All that is left for us to do at House of Henley is to wish you, in this strangest of years, a very Merry Christmas. We do have one post due before 2021; but we’ll also take this opportunity to wish you a happy and healthy 2021.
